Not Happy With Your Lawn This August? Let’s Make Next August Look Different.
August lawns area a pretty good reality check.
By now, we’ve been through months of Carolina heat, stretches of dry weather, heavy rain, weeds, insects, disease pressure and everything else summer can throw at your grass.
So if you’re looking at your lawn right now and thinking, “I really thought it would look better than this,” you’re not alone.
But don’t write off your lawn based on what you’re seeing today.
One of our customers recently left us a review after being with Hippo Turf Care for almost a year. Of everything she said, one line really stood out:
“It’s never looked this good in August!”
That’s the kind of result we love to hear about — especially in August.
A Good-Looking Lawn in August Means Something
Spring can make a lot of lawns look good.
Temperatures are mild. Rainfall is usually more cooperative. Grass is actively growing. Everything is greening up.
August is different.
By late summer, the weak spots have usually shown themselves. Fescue has been trying to survive months of heat. Bermuda and Zoysia are in the heart of their growing season. Weeds have had plenty of opportunities to move in. Insects, disease, drought stress and improper watering can all leave their mark.
That’s why Jessica’s comment caught our attention.
She didn’t just say her lawn looked good.
She said it had never looked this good in August.

There are a few things in that review that I think are worth talking about.
The first is that Jessica had been using Hippo for almost a year when she wrote it.
That’s important because good lawn care isn’t about finding one magic product or making one application.
It’s about having a plan and giving that plan time to work.
What We Do This Season Affects the Next One
When we start working with a new lawn, we’re not just looking for something we can spray that day.
We’re looking at the grass type, weeds, turf health, soil conditions, insect and disease pressure, previous treatments and what that particular lawn needs at that point in the year.
From there, we build a program around the lawn.
Depending on what we’re dealing with, that can include fertilization, weed control, pre-emergent applications, treatments for lawn insects or disease, soil amendments, and aeration and overseeding.
And timing matters.
What we do in the fall helps set up the lawn for what’s ahead. What we do in the spring helps prepare it for summer. What happens throughout the growing season affects what we’re working with when fall comes back around.
That’s why we don’t judge a lawn care program by what happens after one visit.
We’re trying to make the lawn better over time.
There’s a Lot More to Lawn Care Than Buying the Right Product
Jessica also said something we hear from plenty of homeowners:
“My lawn is doing so much better than it was when I tried to ‘handle’ things on my own.”
There’s nothing wrong with taking care of your own lawn. But it can get overwhelming pretty quickly.
Is that brown patch from heat stress? Fungus? Insects? Is the weed you’re fighting something that should be treated now, or would a different approach earlier in the year have prevented it? Is it the right time to fertilize? Are you watering too much, too little or at the wrong time?
Sometimes the product isn’t the hard part.
Knowing what you’re looking at and what to do about it is.

If You Don’t Love Your Lawn This August, Now Is a Good Time to Think About Next August
It might seem strange to start talking about next summer when this one isn’t even over.
But that’s exactly the point.
If your lawn struggled this summer, waiting until next summer to worry about it puts you right back where you started.
For fescue lawns, we’re heading into one of the most important times of the year. Fall aeration and overseeding gives us an opportunity to help rebuild turf that thinned out or struggled through the summer.
For Bermuda and Zoysia lawns, we’re paying attention to how the turf came through peak growing season and what it needs as we move toward fall.
Then the cycle continues.
There will be things to do this fall, this winter, next spring and next summer.
If the goal is a better-looking lawn next August, the work doesn’t start next August.
We Also Want You to Understand What We’re Doing
One of my favorite parts of Jessica’s review actually wasn’t about the lawn.
She said:
“Will is very kind, responsive and does a great job of explaining things. Jonathan has completed most of the treatments on my yard, and he is always very patient with me/my questions…”
That’s important to us.
You don’t need to know everything about turf. That’s what you hired us for.
But you should feel comfortable asking questions.
If you don’t know what grass type you have, ask. If you want to know why we’re applying something, ask. If something looks different between treatments and you’re concerned about it, let us know.
We’d much rather explain what we’re seeing and why we’re doing something than have you wondering what’s happening in your own yard.
Sometimes a Better Lawn Starts With the One Next Door
There’s one more part of Jessica’s story that we love:
She found Hippo because a neighbor recommended us.
That happens a lot.
Someone sees one of our purple trucks at a neighbor’s house. They start noticing how that lawn looks. Maybe they ask the neighbor who’s taking care of it.
Then we get a call.
That’s lawn care advertising that’s pretty hard to beat.
Our work is sitting right there in the front yard for everyone to see.
What Could Your Lawn Look Like Next August?
